Filmmaker and journalist Amirul Ruslan has always been interested in cutting-edge automations and AI processes — all without compromising creativity or ethical use.

In 2022, before ChatGPT even released, he received scholarships and compute support from Google Tensor and Amazon AWS to apply his research to early advances in the generative world; he was also an alpha tester of Google's NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook).

As a video journalist, his primary work is on YouTube as Explaining Malaysia, a video essay channel telling stories of Malaysian history and culture through primary sources. His work has been featured and cited in the likes of CNN, The New York Times, Vice, The Straits Times, and more.

He is an inaugural member of the Progressive Malaysia Fellowship. His first documentary was broadcast internationally and premiered at the Walk The Doc International Film Festival in 2024. His second documentary, LOST IN TRANSIT, premiered at the Freedom Film Festival just this month.
